While our days were dusty and cold, spent mostly above 14,000 feet, and visited by strong winds that stopped for only a few hours in the early morning, they were linked by the long history of water in the Altiplano. Daily we traversed dry salt beds and lakes that were once covered by ocean. Over tens of thousands of years, as the high, long ridges of the Andes rose up volcanically, the ocean was pushed aside, its deep valleys filling with ash, lava and rock. But as recently as 12,000 years ago, sizable lakes still covered these Andean plains. What they left behind - thick salt beds, marine coral and fossils of sea life mixed in with the desert sand - are only the most visible evidence.

This was much more than just a quest for paddle-able lakes. The word Polynesia means many islands. The Tuamotus are one of five French Polynesian archipelagos. They are some of most remote islands in the world, tiny green oases floating in the desert of the sea.

The Tuamotus are composed of 78 distinct coral reef atolls, stretching 930 miles north-northeast of Tahiti. From a distance the islands come and go from sight, thus the dangerous archipelago and labyrinth nicknames. Before satellite navigation, these reefs were the cause of numerous shipwrecks. Since first populated 1,000 years ago, they have known other names: Pakamotu (cloud of islands), Puamotu (dangerous islands) and finally Tuamotu, a Tahitian name meaning distant islands.

Kayaking here provided a daily opportunity for absolute disorientation in an idyllic and wild setting, both challenging and beautiful. Their efforts will be rewarded by the discovery, in a remote area, of the last Middle Eastern breeding colony of the Bald Ibis (Geronticus eremita) in the wild, one of the rarest migratory birds and a symbol of wisdom for the Bedouins of the desert.

Broadcasters:
National Geographic Channel (2007)
Community Television of Santa Cruz County, California, USA, (2007)
PBS: for Wild Chronicles, a program of the National Geographic Society (2006)
Italiani nel Mondo Channel: after selection by the Italian Foreign Office (2006)

IN ENGLISH AND ITALIAN

Awards:
Best Newcomer prize at the 4th Annual Montana CINE International, Missoula, Montana USA (2007)
Best documentary in “Endangered species and Habitats” category at EarthVision Film Festival, Santa Cruz, CA USA (2007).
Merit award for the Use of Music at the “International Wildlife Film Festival”, Missoula,Montana, USA (2006).
Best Newcomer prize at the “International Nature and Environment Film Festival” (2005, Teramo, Italy)

Officially selected as finalist at the following film festivals:
Ekofilm Film Festival 2007, Praha, Czech Republic
Matsalu Nature Film Festival 2007, Lihula, Estonia
CMS Vatavaran Film Festival 2007, New Delhi, India
Wild Talk Africa 2007, Durban, South Africa
Aotearoa Environmental Film Festival 2007, Palmerston North, New Zealand
EnviroFilm 2007, Slovak Republic
Ekotopfilm 2007, Bratislava, Slovak Republik

Topic areas: endangered species, conservation biology, traditional cultures.

Credits:
Produced, written, and directed by GIUSEPPE BUCCIARELLI
Narrated by GIUSEPPE BUCCIARELLI
Camera: GIUSEPPE BUCCIARELLI
Editor: GIUSEPPE BUCCIARELLI

Minutes: 23 minutes

Date: 2007

WATCH NOW ON THESE PLATFORMS

For Educational and Broadcast sales,
please visit The Cinema Guild.

Gimme Green is a humorous look at the American obsession with the residential lawn and the effects it has on our environment, our wallets, and our outlook on life. As the average household level of consumption rises, so does the astronomical amount of waste we collectively create. Are we turning the earth into one giant garbage can? Determined to understand the damage we are doing, Nisker enlists the average urban family, the McDonalds, to keep every scrap of garbage that they produce for three months in their increasingly smelly garage. From organic waste to dirty diapers, from plastic bottles to Christmas wrapping, the McDonald's discover that for every action there is a reaction that affects them and the entire planet.

Topics covered: recycling, composting, landfills, home energy usage, coal mining, stormwater runoff, water quality, packaging, household cleaning products.

Run time: 76 min. | Canada | Language: English
Director: Andrew Nisker
Executive Producers: Andrew Nisker, Navin Khanna, Yvonne Welbon
Producers: Alison Duke, Len Pearl
Composers: Craig Simmons, Holy F**k
Editors: Andrew Nisker, Amy Cargill

For more information about this film, please visit their comprehensive site at www.garbagerevolution.com.

DVD: Public Libraries/ K-12 (includes Public Performance Rights) $19.95
DVD: Colleges/Universities $49.95

WATCH NOW ON THESE PLATFORMS

What is the cost of convenience?
For the Price of a Cup of Coffee is a short environmental documentary examining the life cycle of a paper cup and the repercussions of a society reliant on convenience. The current environmental crisis demands a radical paradigm shift within the collective human psyche. Current scientific orthodoxy regarding the meaning, significance, and purpose of the web of life is thereby challenged. Nature, in its entirety, is seen as a system of self-organizing intelligence, the essential principles of which can guide human culture. This new vision of Nature is accompanied by original upbeat music and eco-friendly footage throughout.

Employing a healthy blend of science, art and metaphysics, author Simon G. Powell presents a radical new perspective on the meaning and significance of life in this innovative and highly unorthodox documentary. Central to the film is the concept of natural intelligence. The underlying premise is that our current definitions of what life is, and what evolution represents, fall short of the mark and do Nature a major disservice. Rather than seeing the evolution of life as a dumb and mindless process, Powell proposes that evolution is a naturally smart process in which naturally smart systems of bio-logic are gradually woven into existence. Indeed, the film provides compelling evidence that Nature, as a whole, is best understood as a system of self-organising intelligence.

It becomes clear from this paradigm that Nature only sustains and preserves sensible behaviour. In light of this, the film proposes that the popular notion of ‘the survival of the fittest’ be superseded by ‘the survival of that which makes sense’ – an operating principle of Nature applicable not just to biological behaviour but also to cultural behaviour.

Accompanied by stunning graphics and original upbeat music throughout, Metanoia will thus guide anyone with an open mind to a new appreciation of what the burgeoning biomimicry movement refers to as ‘Nature’s genius’. For the first time, raw food guru Markus Rothkranz takes you on an exclusive tour through his private home and gives you a glimpse of his solar powered artist dream home and shows you how he singlehandedly made his home powered by sunlight. If he can do it, so can you!

Markus explains the differences between battery (completely off-grid) systems and intertie systems that backfeed the power company. In his highly animated fun way, he also explains with giddy enthusiasm how insulation and "thermal mass" can make even more difference than generating massive amounts of power. Markus explains how tankless water heaters work and how to wire up some really unique clever devices (like car radios for 12 volt killer sound systems). Definitely entertaining. For those who have been following Markus through his health and healing sites, this is a good chance to see his inner private world... his bedrooms, bathrooms, studio, office etc.- all filled with his sculptures and paintings. There are some great home improvement ideas... you can tell he used to work in Hollywood. Being energy efficient does not mean a boring spartan lifestyle. Quite the contrary. This will make you the talk of the neighborhood. In these economic times, saving money and saving the planet are high priority. Sunlight is free. Why not use it?

CREDITS:
Directed and Produced by: Markus Rothkranz
Format: Full Screen
Region: NTSC DVD-R
Number of discs: 1
DVD Release Date: 2009
Run Time: 54 minutes

WATCH NOW ON THESE PLATFORMS

Mujaan (The Craftsman) is a twenty-five minute poetic record of how Mongolian nomads have built their yurts by hand for the past 1,000 years.

On the distant steppes of Mongolia, using only simple tools, strength and ingenuity, a nomad builds a home much the way his ancestors have for the past one thousand years.
