Vasundhara Club, a film archive that will only host films on ecological themes, to open shop in the weeks ahead

On the lines of the National Film Archives of India (NFAI), Pune is all set to get another film compilation.

However, unlike NFAI that has films of all genres, this film archive will only boast films on ecology.

Named as Vasundhara (the Hindi word for Earth) Club, the archive will have numerous national and international films that will educate people about the environment. Virendra Chitrav, director of Vasundhara Club, said, “Having a film archive dedicated to nature is the need of the hour. Right now we are looking for a building where we can start a mini theatre with a capacity of around 100 seats to screen these films.”

Chitrav, who is also the convener of the Vasundhara Film Festival, said that they thought of starting the archive during the festival last year that witnessed an active participation of over 2,500 youngsters. “These youths wanted to see some good films on ecology and wild life and this archive will be a boon for them,” he said.

Although Chitrav agrees that creating the archive will be a Herculean task, he still remains optimistic. “We are sure that we’ll get some financial help from eco-friendly business houses and philanthropists. Also, we have already arranged about 600 environmental films from various embassies and documentary filmmakers,” he said, adding they are in touch with leading environment documentary film maker David Attenborough and many other internationally renowned filmmakers to get a copy of their work for the archive.

The club expects to be the catalyst that will bring environment experts at the city, state and national levels together to discuss the issues related to the environment.
