Actors Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson Help Morph ‘Saving Luna’ into ‘The Whale’

It is rare that a film such as Saving Luna, so captivating of the heart and recipient of numerous standing ovations and People’s Choice Awards at a multitude of international film festivals over the past couple years has had such a difficult time getting theatrical distribution. Until now. Enter Hollywood couple Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson to help take to the big screen a  giant true story about a friendly little whale near Vancouver. They will be Executive Producers of The Whale, along with Eric Desatnik, who introduced Saving Luna to the Canadian actors.

Saving Luna filmmakers Suzanne Chisholm and Michael Parfit directed The Whale, which is an 89-minute reworking of this acclaimed 2007 documentary… about the killer whale called Luna who mysteriously appeared in Nootka Sound in 2001 after being separated from his pod on the West Coast.  In 2004 the couple took a trip to Nootka Sound to do a story for Smithsonian Magazine on the little orca who endeared some people with his affection and friendship and irked others with his playful yet sometimes destructive ways. The couple stayed on to tell a much larger and more personal story of their connection with the whale, the local people and government agencies.
From their website THE WHALE is a celebration of a smart, goofy, friendly, energetic, determined, unforgettable, transcendent being from the sea who changed people’s lives.  Look for it in theaters (finally!) later in the fall or next spring.
